Is It True? Do Dogs Relieve Stress?

Spread the love

If you have ever known the joy of having a four-legged fur ball love you unconditionally then I don’t have to tell you how happy and loved they make you feel.

When the rest of the world is to busy to care your dog will always be there letting you know he/she cares by laying his/her head or paw on your leg or arm or however your fur baby shows you affection almost instantly relaxing you.

Do dogs relieve stress? It is true, it is so true that dogs relieve stress that science now supports the FACT that dogs DO RELIEVE stress.

Studies have found that dogs do much more than just relieve stress for not only their humans but almost any human that comes in contact with them even if you aren’t a dog owner.

Dogs help relieve stress in many ways every day by boosting our mental health which is part of our stress factor.

Self Esteem:

Studies have been done that show pet owners have higher self-esteem than non-pet owners. Higher self-esteem means less fearful and more focused which decreases stress levels.

If you have a dog or cat then you are well aware that pets thrive on being loved on and touched this being especially beneficial to the many folks who live alone.

It’s a  known fact that physical touch builds trust, decreases violence, boosts the immune system, and reduces stress.

Pets help to keep us focused on the present keeping us in the moment which reduces stress connected to the past and the potential future things we usually can’t control anyway.

We all know that laughter is the best medicine. If you don’t own a pet you are missing out on all kinds of goofiness to laugh about. Not a day goes by that our dogs don’t have us rolling in laughter.

How do dogs relieve stress physically? Stress is a reflection of both our mental and physical health.

Studies have shown that pet owners more specifically dog owners on average get more exercise which helps reduce depression and stress.

Those of us who own dogs are more likely to walk regularly and play outside with them giving us much needed exercise.

Blood Pressure:

Those who have pets on average have lower blood pressure.

Studies have proven that just petting a cat or dog or even just being in the same room or looking at them is positively linked to a drop in blood pressure.

Scientific Facts:

Petting, playing with and even snuggling with your dog or cat can increase levels of oxytocin a stress-reducing hormone and decrease cortisol the stress hormone, the result being of course dogs do relieve stress.

The question isn’t do dogs relieve stress any more the question is what other amazing things do dogs do for humans?

The FACT that dogs relieve stress is just one of the many benefits to owning a dog.

Dog truly is man or woman’s best friend always looking out for us it’s only fair we care for them in the way they deserve and make their short time on earth the very best happy life possible.

  1. I think pets make us feel so loved and validated. But of course, it is a dog that is a man’s best friend and they are so intuitive – that they end up changing even our personalities for the better

    1. Hello Mariella,

You are right completely when you say pets meaning any pet to a degree will improve one’s state of mind but yes studies have shown people benefit more so from dogs with cats being a close runner up.

Dogs are just an amazing animal, I know our dogs make me want to be the best human I can be for them.

  3. Since I have been a dog owner my entire life I recommend anyone who loves dogs should own a dog for companionship and stress relief, you can’t be anxious when your dog is always making you smile and laugh. I did go a few years without a dog, and I did experience an increase in my anxiety from stress.

So if you can add a dog to your home,

    1. Hello Jeff,

I couldn’t agree more, our dogs keep us laughing almost all day especially my fattyboy he can make my husband laugh to tears no matter the mood of my husband, and believe me when I tell you that saves everyone in our house a lot of stress, lol.

If you have never experienced lifw with a dog you are seriously missing out on something special.

Thank you for leaving your input Jeff,
